Racism is of course no new idea in America. It has been prevalent since the slave traders kidnapped Africans and sold them to the Americas. And throughout our history, there have been extremist groups that go out of their way to harm and kill black people and any black allies. Among these groups is the infamous terrorist organization, the Ku Klux Klan. I wrote two pieces previously about the earlier history of the group, but the group is such a large part of our history, that one simple post cannot begin to cover the atrocities they have committed.

I left off my last piece in the 1940s where membership was declining and the group was disbanded. Of course, the group did became prevalent again amidst the Civil Rights movement. These angry white men were again furious that black people could have rights so they started up their killing spree once again. It is basically the same story as before, so I will not detail everything they did. One difference this time was that the public became so enraged about the senseless violence that it actually helped them pass the Civil Rights Act. So the KKK actually ended up helping black people receive certain rights. President Lyndon B. Johnson also gave a speech in 1965 condemning the group.

The KKK died down a bit more and they really became isolated to a number of groups in the deep south, popping up here and there throughout the decades. This was until Donald Trump became president of the United States of America. “United”

Before Trump even announced his campaign for President, the country knew him as this old, rich, white guy that fires people on his reality TV show. He was more of this cartoonish character that has a facade of being a successful business person. A lot of Americans loved him, they thought he was funny and they loved that he just said whatever he wanted (often times offensive and/or racist).

After he announced that he was running for office, I think a lot of people were a bit confused, seeing as he has absolutely no experience in government work of any kind. It became clear throughout he campaigning that he was a discriminatory person. He would call Mexican people rapists and criminals, called black people criminals and dirty, called women objects, basically everything he said was offensive unless you were a straight white man. He also bragged about sexually assaulting women. Another thing he did was openly mock and make fun of a reporter with a disability. He obviously has no respect for anyone yet Republicans love that he “just speaks his mind and is honest”. I am sorry but this does not work for me. If someone openly said that they raped someone, I would not give them a gold medal and say, “wow thanks for being truthful, I really appreciate your honesty”, I would say “you’re a criminal what the hell are you doing running for President”.

Time and time again, Trump is blatantly racist but people still love him, why is that? It is because America is racist. The country was built on exploiting black people and people of color. For hundreds of years, white people exploited minorities and even though everyone technically has the same rights now, this is far from the truth.

Pre-Trump, racism was thought of as a bad thing and if you were racist or showed signs of being racist, you were shamed (rightfully so). But when a man like Donald Trump becomes the leader of the free world, it is telling people that hey maybe some racism here and there isn’t so bad. Trump perpetuates the ideals of racism in America and that white is right. So when your president is literally acting racist and telling you it is okay to act that same way, you are going to think to yourself hm I guess I can unleash my inner racist thoughts and treat minorities like shit too. There were plenty of white people that were subtly racist before Trump, but once he became President, it basically gave them a free pass to let go and be terrible.

In fact, the day after Trump was elected, kids at a school in my hometown spray painted swastikas on lockers and started going down the halls yelling the n word. This is no coincidence, this is Trump’s Amerikkka.

Trump basically gave the KKK and any white supremacist free reign to practice their hate. The leader of the KKK even endorsed Trump and when asked if he would disavow the endorsement, Trump declined – he was perfectly fine with a white supremacist, terrorist organization to endorse him. If that does not tell you everything you need to know about our president, I don’t know what will. It is obvious that he has no problem with the KKK. In fact, Trump’s father, Fred, was actually a member of the KKK.

Trump continues to use his powers to suppress black people while promoting hate and white supremacy.

Recently, Trump directed the police to fire rubber bullets and tear gas on peaceful protestors so that they would get out of his way so he could walk to a church for a photo-op. There is clear evidence that the protestors were peaceful yet the police attacked them so Trump could get a picture. On the other hand, there was a KKK rally in Rome, GA recently. Those protestors were yelling racist remarks and threatening violence yet the police did not interfere with them one bit. They let the terrorist organization do whatever they wanted.

There are a million things I could say about Trump and the America he has built, but the fact of the matter is that he is racist. He allows and encourages racism throughout the country. He is destroying our country and his supporters still cling to their MAGA hats. It is truly disgusting, not only what is happening in our country, but how evil and hateful that man continues to be.

I am ashamed and embarrassed to be American.
